Siri Hustvedt in Conversation: UIMP Summer Courses

On Wednesday, September 9, 2023 join Siri Hustvedt in Conversation at UIMP, Paraninfo de la Magdalena.

The Governing Council of the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP) has approved the appointment of the writer Siri Hustvedt as a new honorary doctorate by the UIMP. The ceremony will take place at the Magdalena Palace in Santander on September 7, coinciding with the closing ceremony of the 2023 Summer Courses, which this year closes the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the institution. The laudatio will be given by Isabel Durán Giménez-Rico, dean of the Faculty of Philology of the Complutense University of Madrid.

The UIMP is a singular, well known, public university institution. It was created in 1932 as an international center of high studies, devoted to the creation and dissemination of science and culture, at a time not at all easy, when Spain was committed to education as a way out of its secular isolation. It does not offer undergraduate degrees, concentrating its activity on postgraduate and advanced courses, mainly summer courses, in all disciplines, with special attention to social sciences and humanities.

Since its foundation, its most well known activity has been the organization of the Summer Courses at the Palacio de la Magdalena in Santander, which run from late June to mid-September and in which the most prominent thinkers, artists, scientists and politicians, both from Spain and other countries, have participated. Names as Lorca, Pedro Salinas, Borges, Octavio Paz, Sábato, Carlos Fuentes, Leonardo Padura, Vargas Llosa, Javier Marías, Byung-Chul Han, Mircea Cartarescu, etc., are part of the list of professors in the courses of the UIMP along these years.
